The main objective of the game, which is to collect moons, seems more like a secondary quest unlike the other Mario games even if it's the exact same objective, this is due to the ridiculously high amount of filler moons to collect, so it feels like there is no difference between collecting these moons and collecting the purple coins or collecting the green stars of Mario 3D World, it is even comparable with collecting the BOTW koroks, but it's not the main quest of the game so the impact is far less important. The second point, which by fixing it would probably have fixed the first problem in the same time, is: If they had increased the difficulties of the game by creating more ways to die more often and perhaps make you lose moons with a game over due to the high amount to collect, the game would already have been less boring and more impactful on the player's emotion. Your mission is to find all the moons of a kingdom to unlock the next kingdom, in other words, the same collectathon system as Banjo-Kazooie and Mario 64 which you can describe as "Collect everything, because it's your mission", the problem is if you put an easy game design system like this, you would need to increase the difficulties of the game a lot more or it will get boring, Mario Odyssey failed where Banjo-Kazooie and Mario 64 succeeded because instead of increasing the challenge to create balance with the easier game design system, the game designers have chosen to decrease it, (don't ask me why they did that with one of the easiest game design system ever created, the mario series was ALREADY accessible to everyone since decades), you are not afraid to die in Odyssey because you literally have 10% chances of dying (hard to fall, no timer, no dangerous enemies, no hard boss) and even if you die you literally have nothing to lose (no 1up so no game over, only a useless coins lost). This game is basically Super Mario 64 with a better gameplay but a lot less difficult, probably on purpose for targeting a larger audience.
This is ""in my opinion"" clearly the worst of the series and here's why with the two biggest problems of the game. I understand why some players like this game, but i also understand why some players didn't like it as much as the previous games, i will give you my thoughts on why i think this game is overrated.
